Under the NIS scheme, which is driven by the
Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore
(IDA), a sponsoring organisation co-pays the
scholarship for a particular student, which
covers both tuition fees and living allowance.
Asked about the benefits that the scholarship
will bring, freshman Doan Duc Huy said: “I
greatly appreciate IDA as well as StarHub (my
sponsoring company) for providing me with such a
fantastic opportunity to nurture my talents in
the exciting infocomm world.”
The scheme also allows for an internship stint
with the sponsoring company or public agency.
Huy, who is in the Double Degree Programme in
Computing and Business Administration, is one of
five freshmen from SoC winning the NIS awards.
The other four freshmen are pursuing their
Bachelor of Computing (Honours) with the School,
and they are: Angeline Chan Yacui, Lee Jian
Sheng, Chrisnawan Prasojo and Toh Hui Yee.
All five freshmen will have their undergraduate
studies fully underwritten by their
Scholarships.
Apart from the freshmen, three existing SoC
students also won the NIS, which will be paying
for their tuition fees and living expenses in
their remaining undergraduate career. They
include third-year Computer Engineering student:
Tan Jingxi.
“It is an honour to be a recipient of such a
prestigious scholarship, and I hope that this
experience will help me further improve myself
as a person and a future leader in the IT
industry… I strongly urge NUS students going
into their final year of studies to consider
this scholarship as it might just be the thing
they need to get their career started on the
right track,” said Jingxi.
The other two existing SoC students who have won
the NIS this year are: Yap Zheng-Xiong
(Electronic Commerce Year 3) and Han Sxe Siang
(Electronic Commerce Year 3 student).
In addition, three students who are expected to
be matriculated over the next two years have
also won the NIS. They are: Liauw Jian Mei, Neo
Wei Quan Eugene and Teo Chang Chiew.
The awards were announced on 5 August 2008,
although fuller details became available later.
